Zone by zone

Running the system is not the same as watching it run

Most people test their irrigation from the driveway or from the app. Every zone comes on, water goes up in the air, so the system works. A service visit differs in one unglamorous respect: somebody stands in the zone while it runs. That is where the useful information is, and most of it appears inside the first minute. A rotor can rise perfectly and never turn. A spray head sitting an inch low waters the grass immediately in front of it and nothing beyond. The last head on a long lateral will come up late and fold early, which is the system telling you about its pressure in the only language it has.

So the visit goes zone by zone with the zone running. Arcs are checked against what they are meant to cover and reset where they have wandered. Nozzles are pulled, rinsed, and put back, or replaced when they throw a fine mist instead of droplets. Bodies get straightened where the mower or the ground has leaned them over. Then the parts that want instruments rather than eyes: static pressure at the source, valve boxes opened and looked into, wiring at the controller checked for corrosion, and run times measured against what the turf needs in the month we happen to be standing in.

Twice or once

The case for spring and fall rather than one visit a year

Two visits are worth arguing for because they do different jobs. Spring deals with what happened while nobody was watching: a head cracked by a hard freeze, a valve seized after months of sitting still, a backflow assembly that will not pass, a schedule still set for last September. Fall deals with what a season of use did — mowing, foot traffic, root growth, thousands of open-and-close cycles on every valve — and it is the sensible moment to find those things, while there is still time to put them right before the system is drained for the winter.

One visit a year is not nothing, and we will say so. A small system, few zones, level ground, put in recently and by one pair of hands, will usually stay honest on a single spring check. The argument for two strengthens with age, with slope, with heavy tree cover, and with any system that has been patched by a series of different hands over the years. If we are only going to see it once, we would rather see it in spring, when whatever is wrong still has a whole season in which to cost you water.

Left alone

What five and ten years of no maintenance looks like

Neglect is seldom dramatic. It arrives as a slow loss of accuracy, and no single part of it is alarming enough to prompt a phone call.

  • Nozzles wear. A worn nozzle passes more water in a coarser pattern, so a zone quietly begins delivering more than its schedule assumes, and delivering it unevenly.
  • Heads lean. Ground movement and mower wheels shift bodies a few degrees at a time until an arc is watering the fence and missing the corner it was set for.
  • Run time gets added. Somebody stretches a zone to green up one dry patch, and the rest of that zone then spends every summer over-watered to keep the patch alive.
  • Splices corrode. Wire connections that were never properly sealed will run a zone in dry weather and drop it in wet, which makes the fault look intermittent and imaginary.
  • Valves stop sealing. A stiffened diaphragm seeps between cycles, and that reaches the water bill long before it reaches the surface.

At five years such a system still passes the driveway test. At ten the faults start turning up in company, and what would have been twenty minutes with a screwdriver becomes a repair list and a morning. Nothing on that list was expensive on the day it began.
