How we work

Why we will not quote before we have seen the system run

Irrigation faults are almost always upstream of where they show. A dry patch in the far corner is rarely a problem in the far corner — it is pressure, a partially closed valve, a nicked wire, or a controller running a schedule nobody has looked at since the house changed hands. Quoting from the symptom means quoting for the wrong job.

So the first twenty minutes of any visit is watching. Every zone, start to finish, with the controller in front of us. Most faults announce themselves in that first full cycle, and the ones that do not are the ones worth finding before July does it for you.

That approach costs us time on the first visit and saves it on every visit after. It also means the number we give you is for the actual problem rather than for a plausible one, which is the difference between a repair that holds and a system that has three companies’ worth of guesswork buried in it.

Sometimes what turns up is not irrigation at all — the grade of the lot, or plumbing that sits ahead of the backflow. We say so, and there is no charge for the looking. Fitting irrigation work to a fault that was never irrigation is how a homeowner ends up buying the same solution twice.

The decision

Repair, modernize, or replace — and how to tell which you need

Buried pipe and valve bodies outlast almost everything else in an irrigation system. What fails is solenoids, wire splices and controllers, and all three are replaceable without disturbing a single trench. That is why we will usually talk somebody out of a replacement quote: the expensive part of the system is normally the part that is still fine.

Repair wins when the faults are individual. One solenoid, one splice, one controller. Those are inexpensive parts and the labor to reach them is modest, and a system in that condition will run for years more with occasional attention.

Modernizing makes sense when the pattern changes. If you have had three or four wire faults on the same run, the insulation has broken down along its length and you are paying for the same call repeatedly. Pulling new multi-strand to the manifold costs less than the next four visits and ends it. The same logic applies to a controller that has lost its schedule more than once: they are cheap, and an unreliable one generates a stream of calls that are not really faults at all.

Full replacement is genuinely rare and we will say so plainly. It is for systems where the mainline itself has failed in multiple places, or where the original design is so wrong for the property as it now stands that repairing it means preserving a mistake. If somebody has quoted you a new system for a twenty-year-old one that still holds pressure, get a second opinion before you sign it.

Why we carry matched components rather than whatever fits

A sprinkler head is a sprinkler head only in the sense that a tire is a tire. Nozzle patterns, precipitation rates and pressure requirements vary between manufacturers and between ranges within a manufacturer, and mixing them across a single zone produces exactly what you would expect: one part of the lawn getting twice the water of another with nothing visibly wrong.

So we carry matched Hunter, Rain Bird and Toro parts on the truck rather than a box of generics. It costs slightly more per component and it means a repair leaves the zone watering the way it was designed to, rather than leaving a mismatch for the next person to diagnose.

The same logic applies to solenoids and diaphragms. A valve rebuilt with the correct kit behaves like the valve it was; one rebuilt with a near-enough part tends to weep or stick within a season or two, and the second visit costs more than the correct part did.

Where we do substitute deliberately is with obsolete equipment. Some controllers and a few older valve bodies are simply no longer supported, and keeping them alive stops being economic. In those cases we will tell you what the replacement costs before we spend your money chasing a part that is not made any more.

None of that shows on an invoice, which is why it is worth saying out loud. The difference between a repair that holds for a decade and one you are calling about again next spring is almost always a part that matched, fitted by somebody who ran the zone afterwards to check it actually did.
