Why an Inside the Beltline repair is a sourcing problem
The oldest irrigation we touch is Inside the Beltline, and the defining constraint is not wear — it is availability. Systems here have been added to across three or four decades, so a single manifold can contain a valve model discontinued in the nineties, a replacement from the two-thousands, and something fitted last year. When one of those fails, the question is not how to fix it but what can legitimately go in its place.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the obsolete component should be replaced along with the fitting it sits on, so the manifold moves toward parts that will still exist in ten years. Sometimes it is that a serviceable old body just needs a rebuild kit that is still made. What we try to avoid is forcing a modern component into an old manifold with adapters, because that creates a joint that will leak and a repair somebody has to redo.
The second constraint is space. These lots are small, the houses sit close to the street, and there is rarely a spare corner to work in. Equipment tends to be near the front foundation where it is visible, so repairs have to be neat as well as sound, and access for the next service visit has to be left deliberately rather than assumed.
