When should the system be shut down?

My system is poly — does it really need this?

Poly tolerates more than PVC, but the manifolds, valves, fittings, and the backflow assembly attached to that poly tolerate nothing. Those are the parts we find split in March.

Can I just insulate the backflow instead?

A cover buys hours, not a winter. Insulation slows a freeze; it does not stop one. Draining the assembly removes the water, and water is the whole problem.

The system was installed this summer — surely it can wait a year?

New is not protected. A June install meets its first November like every other system, and builder crews do not come back to blow out what they planted. Year one is exactly when the habit should start.

Do I need to be home?
